From this we conclude, that, to live in harmony and peace…we must trace a line of distinction between those (assertions) that are capable of verification, and those that are not; (we must) separate by an inviolable barrier the world of fantastical beings from the world of realities.

About This Quote

The quote above is from Immanuel Kant's work on the Critique of Pure Reason. He was describing the difference between what he calls "reals" and "appearances." The category of appearances includes all things that are not directly perceivable--whether they are mathematical formulas or theological statements. The category of real (i.e., things that can be known through reason) includes only objects that are directly perceivable by the senses, specifically the five categories of space, time, cause, substance, and form. Within each category there are several kinds of objects--whether mathematical formulas or theological statements, for example. Space consists of three dimensions (length, width and height), time consists of past, present and future, cause consists of cause and effect, substance consists of matter and thing-in-itself (things that cannot be perceived), while form consists of quality and quantity.
